I'm Angela, chief grower at Summerhill Garden. We grow food and flowers on a spray-free, mostly organic, always improving property up the hill in Palmerston North.
The passion that lead me...
I've always grown stuff, always been the kid that loved being in the dirt, and well... some things never change. Now I have my own kids and the desire to grow stuff has multiplied just as fast as my family did!
I'm passionate about food, good food, local food, healthy food. Growing my own, preparing it, eating it, sharing it and serving it to my family is a key foundation in my life. As I've matured (don't laugh) I have also welcomed beauty in my garden with flowers.
Chickens, the gateway animal
One of the first things I did when we moved to a larger property, was get chickens. Home grown eggs are wonderful, but I adored having them scratching around and being part of the landscape. To this day, 4 years later, one of the biggest highlights of my day STILL is collecting eggs (usually bundled in my t-shirt).
Dahlias, the gateway flower
After seeing the explosion of dahlia varieties, and the stunning pics from dahlia growers from around the world, I was hooked on these intricate beauties. I wanted to grow so many and to share them too. My collection grew from around 10 in the first year to well over 50 varieties now. This has lead to the beginning of this business of growing flowers for cutting (and all the other little bits along the way).
I hope you enjoy my journey and maybe make one of your own as well.
